Some stories make you think after you finish them - could this actually be real? Could this fictional world exist, hidden just out of sight? Let’s think about it.
Take Harry Potter, for example. It’s so well-written that it makes you question: what if magic really is out there? What if the magical world is hidden from regular people, and those who find out accidentally have their memories erased? It is mentioned in the novel that muggles who find out about magic are made to forget it. There are many kids who still believe in these worlds and they may be right.
I'm not trying to convince others that other worlds actually exist, or bring up a new theory. I'm just saying the stories are set so beautifully that they may indeed be real and we would never know. The stories are built so perfectly that it feels like it could fit into our world without us even noticing.
Or think about The Mortal Instruments or The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare. These books talk about Shadowhunters—half-human, half-angel warriors - who fight demons while staying invisible to regular people. You could say that you have never seen demons, but hey, that could be because the Shadowhunters destroyed them. You can never know when your memory has been erased since well, that is the point of a memory wipe. Maybe you encountered a dementor today and just don't remember it! Maybe you walked past the Leaky Cauldren, or was almost hit by the Knight Bus - you wouldn't know.
Then there’s Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger, where elves live in hidden cities, using their abilities to keep their world separate from humans. The way these worlds are built makes them feel almost possible, like you could accidentally stumble into them if you were in the right place at the right time.
That’s what makes these stories so special. They’re written in a way that fills the gaps in our world. They make you think about all the things we don’t see or don’t understand. What if there’s a reason some myths never go away? What if there’s more to our world than we know, hidden just beyond our reach?
When you’re a kid, ideas like these are exciting—they make the world feel bigger, like anything could happen. As you get older, though, you start to realize just how cleverly these stories are written. They’re not just fun - they make sense in a weird way. They’re so detailed, so carefully built, that you start to think, “Maybe, just maybe…”
We might never know if there’s a Hogwarts in Scotland or if Shadowhunters really protect us from demons. But these stories make you want to believe, even just a little. They remind us that the world might be more magical than it seems, and that’s why we keep coming back to them.
